Martin backs clean tidal power

Published on Tue 1st May 2007

Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood has joined other west country MPs in calling for an urgent reappraisal of the potential for clean tidal energy from the Severn estuary.

'I know there are genuine environmental concerns about a Severn Barrage across the estuary' said Martin 'and that's why it's important that alternatives to a barrage are explored too. But the Severn has the potential to generate at least 5% of the UK's entire electricity supply without adding at all to the greenhouse gases that are causing global warming. That's fantastically important when our children's futures are at risk.'

He challenged the Government's energy minister to bring about a 'speedy reappraisal' during a parliamentary debate.
