Martin says no to nuclear power

Published on Mon 30th Apr 2007

Local MP Martin Horwood has condemned government plans to commission a new generation of nuclear power plants, even all the previous ones needed billions of pounds of public money spent on them and created radioactive waste that will take centuries to clean up. The site of Berkeley power station in Gloucestershire won't be declared completely safe until the 22nd century!

In the meantime, Lib Dem research has shown there are plenty of alternatives even if we want to cut on coal and gas in the face of global warming. Renewable alternatives include wave and tidal power, wind power on land and at sea, energy crops, heat and power from underground thermal sources and 'ground-source heat pumps' pioneered locally by the new Chelsea Building Society and Police buildings.
