Member of Parliament
Martin Horwood
Martin Horwood was born in Cheltenham in 1962.
He went to Oxford University to read Modern History in 1981, and was elected President of the Oxford Student Liberal Society and then Chair of the party's national student wing, the Union of Liberal Students.
After graduating and leaving student politics, Martin worked first in a London advertising agency and then in the voluntary sector. In 1990 he moved to Oxford to work for Oxfam and was elected as a local district and parish councillor there. During his stay at Oxfam, Martin's teams raised tens of millions of pounds for the poor in developing countries, including £2.5m for victims of the Rwanda genocide.
In 1995 he married Dr Shona Arora who was then training in public health medicine. Martin and Shona have two children, Maya and Sam.
They moved to India for a year, Martin working for Oxfam and Shona for the UN programme on AIDS and a small charity working on sexual health in the slums of Delhi.
They returned to the UK, Martin becoming the first Director of Fundraising at the Alzheimer's Society, the leading care and research charity for people with dementia and their carers. Martin led the team that won the charity Tesco Charity of the Year, earning £16,000 for the Cheltenham branch of the Society alone.
Martin returned home to Cheltenham in 2001 to work for local business Target Direct which works mainly with charity clients, including the British Heart Foundation, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Cheltenham's own National Star College. He became their Head of Consultancy. Shona was appointed Director of Public Health for Cheltenham and Tewkesbury.
Martin was elected as Cheltenham's MP in May 2005. He has served on the Environmental Audit committee and was the Liberal Democrat shadow minister for the environment. He was also chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on tribal peoples and secretary of the all-party parliamentary group on corporate responsibility.
Martin successfully defended his seat in 2010.

Candidates standing for election/re-election to Cheltenham Borough Council on 6th May 2010
All Saints
Cllr Charles Stewart
Charlie lives locally in All Saints ward at 20 Duke Street. He has previously been a local Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator and a member of the local Police Panel.
Charlie very much enjoys the outdoor life and can often be seen working on his allotment in Cheltenham. He thinks that everyone should be entitled to a safe and clean environment, safer roads and good local schools that are accessible for all.
Charlie believes that the main issues in the area are: the on-going problems with boy racers in the town centre, parking problems including illegal parking in Hewlett Road and the future of the Haines and Strange and Odeon cinema sites.

Paul McCloskey
Paul's family has lived in Cheltenham for many years. His mother is now in a residential home in Charlton Kings.
Prior to taking early retirement Paul worked for British Telecom and the Post Office as a Change Management Consultant helping both organisations adapt to the threat of Competition and Privatisation.
Paul is active in the local community. He is a trustee of Charlton Kings Youth & Community Centre and drives the Senior Citizens' minibus. He is chairman of the Cancer Care Society and a volunteer for Breast Cancer Care supporting men whose partners are affected by breast cancer.
He is married to Helena and they have two daughters; they have just become grandparents and so are particularly concerned about the sort of world that their granddaughter will grow up in. They were active in local politics before moving to Charlton Kings.
His key concerns are:
• Resisting overdevelopment of Cheltenham and retaining its essential character
• Ensuring everyone has a good start in life and an opportunity to reach their full potential
• Providing Dignity in Old Age
• Enabling people to live sustainably and balance their work and family life.

Helena Mary McCloskey
Helena McCloskey is the Liberal Democrat candidate for Charlton Kings in the forthcoming Borough Council elections. She moved to the Beeches Estate five years ago but was a regular visitor to the village in the previous decade. Prior to her move, she was a well-regarded town councillor in Hertfordshire serving on the Planning, Finance and Transport sub-committees. She represented her town on the Borough Standards Committee and the Local Strategic Partnership as well as being an active member of the town's Crime Prevention Partnership.
Her early working life was with the GPO, where she worked as a computer systems analyst. During a career break to look after her children, she obtained an Open University degree and worked part-time in the local Cheshire Home. On returning to work as a researcher in the Prison Service, she investigated ways of preventing re-offending and the prevention of suicide and self-harm among prisoners. She has also done voluntary work with breast cancer patients and in the Probation Service. She has received awards for her work in both the Prison and Probation services
As a "people person", she is passionate about the importance of effective two-way communication with local residents and the need for a fair, free and open society where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential. However, she also believes that having rights also implies responsibility towards society and its least fortunate members.
If elected, her priorities will be:
• The state of the roads and pavements in Charlton Kings
• The extension of the council's recycling scheme
• The protection of the Green Belt around Cheltenham
• Supporting Charlton Kings Parish Council in its work to improve the amenities of the village

Cllr Simon Wheeler
Simon Wheeler has lived and worked in Cheltenham since 1968 and has been honoured to serve Cheltenham as a Borough Councillor from 2002 and as a County Councillor since 2005. In his spare time Simon is a keen landscape photographer and walker and loves being on the Cotswold Hills as much as the top of a mountain in the Scottish Highland, and that is why he is so passionate about protecting Cheltenham's Green Belt. Living in Hesters Way, just off Fiddlers Green, and working for a local factory on the Tewkesbury Road, Simon says, "This year it makes sense for me to stand down as Councillor in Springbank and I would like to stand as Councillor for the Hesters Way Ward instead, to concentrate all my time there".

Jonathan Walklett
Jon was born locally in Cheltenham, attended Cheltenham Grammar School and subsequently after a few years working in a sales/marketing capacity was encouraged by his employer to further his business qualifications at the old North Gloucestershire Technical College. The 1980's and early 90's were spent working and travelling around England to places as far apart as Newmarket, Leeds and Sunderland. On returning to Cheltenham in 1986 his marketing career continued to develop and in 1988 he headed up an acquisition team purchasing an engineering business in Wolverhampton. Jon returned home to Cheltenham in 1994 where his interest in music led him to create a small recording studio and become creatively involved with local musicians and bands. He also became aware of local small business needs for professional marketing input and spends a couple of days a week working in that environment. Having lived on the border of St Paul's and All Saints for ten years, Jon is well aware of the many challenges facing local government including housing and the local environment. Jon looks forward to working with your local councillor Paul Wheeldon to ensure that the St. Paul's area obtains its fair share of funding to support the many neighbourhood projects.
