Martin makes maiden speech

May 25, 2005 6:50 PM

Cheltenham's new MP, Martin Horwood, shortly before 8 pm on Wednesday 24th May made his debut in the House of Commons . His maiden speech, as the first speeches by newly-elected MPs are known, was during today's health and education debate, which is entirely appropriate given Cheltenham's motto of 'salubritas et eruditio'.

Martin took the opportunity to raise important issues in the town, such as Battledown Ward, and the threat to the green belt. He mentioned Cheltenham's parliamentary history which stretches back to 1832, and praised his predecessor Nigel Jones for his championing of trade union rights at GCHQ, and also Sir Charles Irving for his commitment to social reform, and his independence of spirit.

Speaking after he had given his speech, Martin said: "It is a great honour to represent my home town in Parliament, and I thoroughly enjoyed using my first speech to sing the town's praises. It was important to highlight the tradition of educational excellence, to welcome the contributions of our museums and festivals, and to recognise the importance of tourism to our local economy.

"However, it is also important to talk about the problems facing Cheltenham, such as the underfunding of our schools and colleges compared to those in other counties, the inequalities and anti-social behaviour which cause such misery, and the threat to the provision of high-quality, locally accessible healthcare.

"I promised to fight for everyone in this town, and that fight has now begun in earnest".
