Shadow LibDem environment minister and Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood has challenged the government in Parliament over its 'green' targets. Speaking in the debate on the Queen's Speech, Martin challenged environment minister David Miliband to adopt binding annual targets for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, as called for by Friends of the Earth. Ministers have so far refused to be held to account in anything less than five years - well after the expected date of the next general election!
"How can we judge them on their record at the next election" said Martin afterwards "if they won't set a sensible target for greenhouse gas reductions? Perhaps the answer's clear enough: if they did set annual reductions targets now, they'd miss them. Greenhouse gas emissions are rising not falling at the moment. What we need is not just targets every year but action every year."
