Nurses, midwives, doctors and workers from across the NHS and the country converged on Parliament last week to protest against nationwide cuts and closures under the banner 'NHS Together'.
Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood was lobbied by local representative of the Royal College of Midwives Julia Chandler - a familiar face from the birth of his own children at St.Paul's maternity unit! "So many of us owe so much to midwives like Julia. Now it's payback time. We have to support them, keep up the pressure on government and hold the local NHS to its promise that St.Paul's will stay open."
Martin also highlighted the plight of less high profile services like adult mental health services, health visiting and IVF treatment for infertility. "Not everyone can stand up on a platform and shout about some of these very private conditions and problems. But they mustn't be forgotten." Martin is pressing for a meeting with the newly-reorganised Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust to discuss the whole range of issues.
