Politicians don't always sit and listen but Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood had to do just that recently when he was invited by his opposite number in the UK Youth Parliament, Andy Woods, to listen to local young people's views on everything from transport to sex education. Youth workers joined pupils from Pittville and Betteridge schools to let Martin know about young people's concerns.
Martin said "young people today get a really mixed press. Some people seem to think they're a threat to law and order and not much else. They should have heard what I heard today. Young people coming up with practical ideas for improving access to transport, encouraging participation in local decision-making and, yes, how to curb anti-social behaviour." Martin promised to help Andy promote the 2007 Youth Parliament elections to local schools as one way to build understanding of the political process.
