Speaking to councillors and campaigners from all over Gloucestershire, Cheltenham MP and Lib Dem shadow environment minister Martin Horwood delivered a strong call to action on the environment.
"The government has made plenty of green noises but carbon emissions in the UK are still going up, not down" said Martin later. "The 'green' building code for new homes is still optional, Gordon Brown has watered down requirements for big companies to report on their environmental impact and there's been no serious effort to introduce green taxes that would benefit those who use energy more wisely. The Tories are even worse, with lots of photo opportunities but no actual policies at all."
"It's still down to the Lib Dems locally and nationally to provide leadership on green issues and to come up with concrete practical suggestions on how we should go green. Local councils should expand recycling, explore how to support local renewable energy and promote energy efficiency more."
