Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood has been consulted by the UK's largest charity Cancer Research UK on whether to press for improvements in the law relating to charitable giving. The former fundraising adviser and Lib Dem Charities Bill spokesman was asked to comment on the GiftAid scheme which repays donors' income tax to charities, making each gift around a third more valuable.
"I replied that I thought most people were now aware of GiftAid" said Martin "but the trick is to make it even easier to use. I think every regular gift to charity should be automatically GiftAided so people don't really have to think about it and the charity can claim the money back from Gordon Brown on a more reliable basis. In Cancer Research UK's case, that could add up to millions more for vital research".
