Chris Huhne
Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood has quickly declared his support in the Lib Dem leadership race that is following Ming Campbell's unexpected departure this week. Martin, the Lib Dem junior environment spokesperson was present as his close colleague Chris Huhne MP declared his intention to run for leader.
Martin was a key member of Mr Huhne's campaign team in spring 2006 when the Eastleigh MP went from 'dark horse' outsider to become Ming Campbell's main challenger and win 42% of the final vote. Mr Huhne, shadow secretary of state for the environment, said he wanted the Lib Dems to campaign for "a fairer and greener society with people in charge".
Commenting, Martin said:
"Chris was highlighting not only his well-known green credentials but also his commitment to social justice and to handing back local control over public services. He has the intellect and experience inside and outside Parliament to take on the top job.
"Much is being made by the media of the need for youth and charisma. Chris is a supremely confident performer on platforms and in the media but we need a leader to take on Gordon Brown as well as David Cameron."
