Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood has supported a new plan from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and many other leading environmental organisations. It aims to encourage better use of British water - from natural wetland habitats to household water usage to smarter urban drainage.
The Blueprint for Water was launched at Westminster by the RSPB, Friends of the Earth, the Wildlife Trusts and other leading environmental and conservation charities. "It makes sense to work with the environment not against it" said Martin, who has signed a parliamentary motion in support of the Blueprint. "We can cut back on the amount of water we flush down the loo or down the drain and increase the amount we allow to seep naturally back into the land. We can do more to increase wetland habitats for birds. That will mean less risk of both water shortage and storm flooding, less energy used to pump and clean the water and savings all round. But it needs the government and its agencies to take a lead".
