Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood has called for a local income tax that would be fairer and more popular, during a recent House of Commons debate.
Martin pointed out that the Government's own independent review of local taxation suggested the Lib Dem policy of a local income tax was a perfectly good alternative to the unfair Council Tax.
'How the Tories and Labour can still defend this terrible tax is beyond me' commented Martin afterwards 'but both of them do. They're the Council Tax Twins. Both think it's OK for the owner of a £2 million house on Battledown to pay less out of every £1 they earn than a pensioner in St.Paul's. But that's exactly what happens when you have a tax that isn't linked to ability to pay.'
