Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood has praised the work of a special unit set up to support young people repeatedly excluded from school. St.George's Centre takes kids with little or no chance of leaving school with qualifications or prospects and delivers an amazing success rate. Teenagers leave St.George's with an average of more than four GCSEs according to its latest Ofsted report - the same report heaped praise on the centre for its 'outstanding' work bringing kids back from the brink.
Visiting St.George's, Martin praised the young people themselves as well as the dedicated staff: 'I was very impressed by their positive attitude and startled that these were kids who had been excluded for repeated problems in mainstream schools, sometimes making teacher's lives a misery and threatening other children's education. But it takes money to give this kind of dedicated support. It shows just how important it is to give both specialist centres and the mainstream schools the support they need to handle difficult kids well.'
