Speaking in Parliament in his role as Lib Dem shadow environment minister, Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood has called for tough action to protect British companies with good environmental records.
Martin was contributing to a debate on the European scheme designed to combat climate chaos across national boundaries. Martin praised the European Emissions Trading Scheme which caps the amount of Carbon Dioxide greenhouse gas companies can emit and called for it to be stepped up after 2012. Martin pointed out that no one country would have been able to take such decisive action on its own.
But he warned that other countries, including Australia and George Bush's USA, were not playing ball on international agreements. It was no good British or other European companies doing the right thing if that meant they lost out to American competitors. 'We have to explore what sanctions we would put in place'.
