Welcome to Cheltenham Liberal Democrats
My name is Martin Horwood and I have been Cheltenham's MP since 2005. I was born and brought up in Cheltenham and I lived and worked here with my family before I was an MP, so when I fight to protect our green spaces, to defend local NHS services and see the best for our children, these are issues that really matter to me.
I'm also proud that we have a Liberal Democrat-led council and that the LibDems introduced the first kerbside recycling of glass, paper, cans, green waste, cardboard and now plastic bottles, that they held out a helping hand to charities like the Cheltenham Housing Aid Centre when the last Conservative administration cut their funding and that they were the first to change council policy to help stop 'garden-grabbing' overdevelopment.
On this website you'll find out more about what we've been campaigning about, links to the national party, our leader Nick Clegg, Liberal Youth and much, much more.
I hope you'll become part of Cheltenham's great Liberal tradition too and help us fight for greener, safer, fairer Cheltenham. Use the contact us link to get in touch. I'll look forward to meeting you.
MARTIN TELLS TRUST: NOW TALK TO LIDO AND RESIDENTS
Fri 23rd Jul 2010
CHELTENHAM MP Martin Horwood has told Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust to go back to the drawing board and consult properly with local residents and the Sandford Lido after the defeat of its multi-storey car park plans by local campaigners. A planning appeal by the Trust and its car park operator Vinci was rejected in a damning verdict this week by a planning inspector after earlier being turned down by Cheltenham Borough Councillors.

Martin welcomes new role
Tue 6th Jul 2010
CHELTENHAM MP Martin Horwood has welcomed his appointment by Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg today as chair of the Liberal Democrat parliamentary transport committee. He will chair his first meeting of the policy group tomorrow [Wednesday]. Martin's new brief will cover all aspects of transport policy including rail, road, aviation, buses, cycling and alternatives to travel. In the last parliament, he was a shadow environment minister for the Lib Dems but as many senior Lib Dems have entered the coalition government, roles have changed to focus on co-ordinating policy with ministers and leading the development of new policy for the Liberal Democrat party. Lib Dem transport minister Norman Baker will attend the parliamentary committee whenever possible and Martin will have a direct line to the Department for Transport.

Martin questions CRC decision
Tue 29th Jun 2010
CHELTENHAM MP Martin Horwood has responded to today's government announcement that the Commission for Rural Communities (CRC) is to close. The Cheltenham-based agency will be replaced by a Rural Communities Policy Unit that will be part of the Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). The coalition has announced its intention to cut costs across government to help reduce the crippling national debt and also to remove so-called 'arms-length' quangos when policy is better made by ministers. But Martin has been critical of the lack of consultation surrounding this decision and said the government's announcement left important questions unanswered.

"How can you possibly take on such a large financial commitment as Trident without considering the military and political implications? If fierce cuts are to be made in Britain's conventional forces, surely we have to consider whether replacing Trident can be justified. "
Sir Menzies Campbell
Response to announcement that the Ministry of Defence will be responsible for the cost of replacing Trident - 30 July
"With most of their leadership contenders claiming to back AV for a fairer voting system, it is astonishing they now wish to block the legislation to make that happen. Each and every Labour MP campaigned on a manifesto committing to a referendum. Now they have the opportunity to make this happen but have chosen to say no for opposition's sake. "
Simon Hughes MP
Comment on Labour's decision to oppose legislation for a referendum on the alternative vote - 28 July
"With more than half of ASBOs breached in 2008, this was a policy more about posturing than effective policing. Local communities know that other measures, such as Acceptable Behaviour Contracts can nip problems in the bud before they escalate. "
Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Committee for Home Affairs and Justice, Tom Brake MP
Commenting on speech by the Home Secretary in which she said it was 'time to move beyond Anti Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) - 28 July
