Campaigning to win with Martin Horwood

Martin Horwood

Welcome to Cheltenham Liberal Democrats

Thank you from Martin Horwood, MP for Cheltenham

Martin Horwood

Welcome to the website of Cheltenham Liberal Democrats.

My name is Martin Horwood and I'm the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Cheltenham - a tradition that stretches back to the town's first MP, the Liberal Craven Berkeley in 1832. I was born and brought up in Cheltenham and I lived and worked here with my family before I was an MP, so when I fight to protect our green spaces, to defend local NHS services and see the best for our children, these are issues that really matter to me.

I'm also proud that we have a Liberal Democrat-led council and that the LibDems introduced the first kerbside recycling of glass, paper, cans, green waste, cardboard and now plastic bottles, that they held out a helping hand to charities like the Cheltenham Housing Aid Centre when the last Conservative administration cut their funding and that they were the first to change council policy to help stop 'garden-grabbing' overdevelopment.

On this website you'll find out more about what we've been campaigning about, links to the national party, our leader Nick Clegg, Liberal Youth and much, much more.

I hope you'll become part of Cheltenham's great Liberal tradition too and help us fight for greener, safer, fairer Cheltenham. Use the contact us link to get in touch. I'll look forward to meeting you.

Martin welcomes NHS bed cut rethink

Thu 25th Feb 2010

CHELTENHAM MP Martin Horwood has welcomed a rethink by the local NHS on the 200 bed closures threatened by the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that runs both Gloucester Royal and Cheltenham General. But he is pressing on with a summit meeting tomorrow with NHS Gloucestershire Chief Executive Jan Stubbings to discuss the financial situation in the NHS in Gloucestershire.

Martin tells minister: watch out for Warden Hill

Thu 25th Feb 2010

CHELTENHAM MP Martin Horwood today addressed the National Flood Forum's annual conference in Birmingham and called for a change in policy and in mindset from planners and politicians over flooding. He was speaking in his capacity as Lib Dem national spokesman on flooding to an audience including floods minister Huw Irranca-Davies MP and Environment Agency chief Lord Smith. Martin highlighted the nonsense of one government department - Defra - spending hundreds of millions of pounds to reduce flood risk, only for another - the Department for Communities & Local Government - to do the exact opposite. And he criticised the Conservative Party for missing the chance to back a change in the law governing building on flood plains.

200 NHS bed losses may be tip of the iceberg, says Martin

Fri 19th Feb 2010

Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood has arranged an urgent meeting with NHS chiefs to discuss the planned loss of 200 beds from Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General. Martin will be meeting NHS Gloucestershire chief executive Jan Stubbings on Friday 26 February at 12:00. The cuts were announced by the hospitals chief executive Dr Frank Harsent but it is NHS Gloucestershire that is in charge of spending government money on all NHS services in Cheltenham.

Martin calls on councils to protect countryside for all

Fri 19th Feb 2010

In a detailed submission to Tewkesbury, Gloucester and Cheltenham councils, Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood has called on them to rule out so-called 'urban extensions' that would threaten the countryside around Cheltenham. Martin was responding to the three councils' initial consultation on its Joint Core Strategy which will set out future plans on everything from new housing to renewable energy. The Joint Core Strategy will have to implement the government's controversial Regional Spatial Strategy unless it is scrapped after the General Election.

Air quality could be killing 500 a year in Gloucestershire

Tue 9th Feb 2010

UP TO 500 people a year could be dying in Gloucestershire because of air pollution, if national statistics uncovered today by Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood hold true for the county. The figure for Cheltenham alone could be in excess of 100 deaths a year from heart, lung and other diseases, while the national total could be as high as 50,000 a year - more than twice the previous estimate.

Quotes of the Week

"Anyone who wants to pass laws in this country should pay this country's full taxes and not hide behind the special offshore status of non-doms. Non-doms have to tell the taxman that their first allegiance is to another country. No-one should be a British lawmaker whose first allegiance is not to Britain."

Chris Huhne, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary

"I think people are entitled to expect a sensible, stable government at a time when the country is facing very, very acute choices. We take what the markets are worrying about immensely seriously. We will not take any risk with the creditworthiness of the economy."

Nick Clegg, Leader of the Liberal Democrats

Financial Times - 3 March
