LIBERAL DEMOCRATS MAKE MAJOR GAINS IN TEWKESBURY BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTIONS

5.05.51pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 10th May 2007

The Liberal Democrats made major gains in the Tewkesbury Borough Council elections on 3 May. We increased our representation on the Council by 6 seats and now have a total of 17 councillors. Labour lost their last two seats on the Council. The political balance on the Council is:-

Conservatives 19

Liberal Democrats 17

Tewkesbury Independents 2

The Liberal Democrat successes were:-

Brockworth - Maureen Rowcliffe-Quarry re-elected and Clair Patey and Mike Collins won seats from a Conservative and Independent

Churchdown Brookfield - Richard Smith re-elected and Loraine Yates won seat from Independent.

Churchdown St Johns - Pearl Stokes and Audrey Ricks re-elected and Kay Berry held on to the seat which Hazel Finch had previously held.

Cleeve Grange - Sue Hillier-Richardson re-elected

Cleeve St Michaels - Philip Taylor and Jack Richardson won seats from the Conservatives

Hucclecote - Peter Brazil re-elected

Innsworth with Down Hatherley - Bill Whelan won seat from Independent

Northway - Cynan Clucas re-elected and Richard Hart won seat from Labour

The only real disappointment was the loss of Cait Clucas in Ashchurch with Walton Cardiff by 8 votes in spite of the fact that she increased her vote from 305 to 439. This result was particularly hard as Cait has worked hard on the Council and hard for the benefit of her local community.

Alistair Cameron, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Tewkesbury Constituency said:

"Following our success in the Borough Council's elections we feel we have real momentum behind us. In particular, many Labour supporters will now be voting Liberal Democrat in Tewkesbury as we are the only ones who can beat the Conservatives.

Our councillors will work hard to represent the people who live in their areas on the Council and to ensure that the Council gives them the service which they deserve."
